The Cluster of Excellence 'Origin and Structure of the Universe' is a joint research institution at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), a cooperation by the physics departments of the TUM and the Ludwig-Maximilians University, four Max-Planck Institutes (MPA, MPE, MPP, IPP), the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the computer centre LRZ.

The position will be within the closely collaborating groups of Professor Laura Fabbietti and Torsten Dahms. The groups are actively involved in the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Professor Laura Fabbietti and her group are interested, amongst others, in the femtoscopy with strange resonances in elementary and heavy-ion collisions and possible implications for the physics of neutron stars. Her group also plays a leading role in the development of the ALICE-TPC detector upgrade with a GEM readout system. Torsten Dahms focuses on the measurement of low-mass dileptons and thermal radiation in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC with the ALICE experiment.

The successul candidate is expected to prepare for a leading contribution in the upcoming LHC Run-II data analysis on low-mass dielectrons or femtoscopy in ALICE. In addition, it is possible to get involved in the ALICE-GEM upgrade project.

The postdoc will profit from scientific infrastructures on the Garching campus and numerous scientific activities within the cluster, with many opportunities for collaboration with other groups in Munich.

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD (or equivalent) degree in particle or nuclear physics at the time of appointment. Applications from female scientists and candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged. The salary is according to the German public service pay agreement (TV-L E13).

Applications including a CV, a copy of the PhD certificate, and a statement of research interest should be uploaded on the Cluster web site http://www.universe-cluster.de/about-us/jobs/ until December 31, 2014. Three letters of recommendation should be arranged to be sent to Dr. Torsten Dahms (torsten.dahms@tum.de).

Job Period: 15.02.2015 - 31.12.2016
