The Institute for Particle Physics at ETH Zurich invites applications for the position of a
P O S T D O C T O R A L or S E N I O R P O S T D O C T O R A L P H Y S I C I S T
starting in autumn 2015 to work on detector development and hardware activities for the
Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The
IPP CMS group has a strong involvement both in physics analyses as well as in the
operation and upgrade of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and the barrel pixel
detector (BPIX) of CMS. We are also involved in generic R&D of radiation hard CVD
diamond detectors.
The successful candidate is expected to have a PhD in Particle Physics and an excellent
record of successful work in the field of hardware development and detector operations.
Candidates with experience from a hadron collider experiment are particularly favored. The
candidate is expected to play a leading role in the quality assurance of the BPIX module
production for the CMS phase 1 pixel detector upgrade and in the subsequent integration
and commissioning of the detector. Beyond phase 1, participation in pixel detector
technology for the CMS phase 2 upgrade is expected. For candidates with sufficient
postdoctoral experience, the appointment can be made at the (non-permanent, non-tenure
track) senior postdoc (Oberassistent/in) level.
The initial term of the position is three years with the possibility of extension for a further
three years. Interested candidates are asked to submit an application by 15 Sept. 2015
together with a letter of motivation, the names and addresses of three referees, a
curriculum vitae and a list of publications. The application should be sent via email only
to ipp-cmsjob@phys.ethz.ch. (see also https://inspirehep.net/record/1384982)
Recommendation letters will be solicited from the provided contact information as
appropriate. Inquiries concerning the positions can be made to Prof. Rainer Wallny
(rainer.wallny@cern.ch, inquiries only). The envisaged starting date is in October 2015 or
as soon as the position can be filled thereafter.
