NEWS FROM POINT 2
- Extension of the 2024 proton-proton run by 4 weeks:
The CERN directorate has recently approved an extension of the 2024 proton proton run by 4 weeks, with a corresponding shortening of the 2025 proton-proton run by 4 weeks as well. The overall beam allocation for 2024+2025 will remain the same for both proton-proton and heavy-ions collisions. As a consequence of the extension, the 2024 heavy-ion run will be shifted by 4 weeks. The number of heavy-ions days will remain unchanged with respect to the original schedule.- Heavy-ion run: 26 October to 25 November
- The start of the 2024/2025 LHC EYETS: 25 November 2024
- The new shift schedule, with the additional proton-proton shift blocks as well as the shifted heavy-ion period, will be opened to the whole collaboration on Wednesday 17 April at 13:00 CET.
- Shift booking opportunities:
- DSC blocks from April 21 to April 30
- QC block from May 5 to May 10
- ECS block from May 9 to May 14
- SL block from May 31 to June 5
Shifts booking via SAMS.
- ALICE Run Manager (1-14 April 2024): Maciej Marek CZARNYNOGA:
Maciej is an engineer from WUT in Poland. He is a junior member of the collaboration. Maciej joined the ALICE collaboration in August of 2022 to work on the FIT detector for which he developed the DCS system and is an expert in the FIT detector technical maintenance. Since he joined the FIT project, Maciej is not only involved in operations with FIT On-calls, he quickly committed to the central DCS shift and Shift Leader shift and developed a solid experience of central operations during the past two years.
In the very first hours of his mandate, Maciej will coordinate the data-taking with collisions at 450 GeV. He will then supervise the upgrade and validation of the control systems software with SYNTHETIC and REPLAY runs, and the orchestration of the ALICE operations together with the ongoing LHC commissioning. During the second week of his mandate, he will likely have the challenging task of supervising the first collisions at 6.8 TeV and the beginning of the LHC intensity ramp-up. During this phase, Maciej will coordinate the data taking of several special runs, for detector calibration and alignment.
- LHC commissioning: The LHC commissioning is progressing as planned. First stable beams at 450 GeV were provided on 21 March, and an additional fill is expected on 1 April. Meanwhile the machine is advancing toward the first collisions in stable beams at 6.8 TeV. The intensity ramp-up at top energy is scheduled to start between Saturday 6 April and Monday 8 April.
- P2 operations: on 21 March, ALICE successfully collected the first collisions at 450 GeV. The experiment performed very well, confirming its readiness for the physics data taking of this year. During the rest of the LHC commissioning activities the experiment remains in a safe state, and the central acquisition is constantly monitored by replaying MonteCarlo-generated data as well as real data from 2023. Upgrades of the central systems and of the online processing software are performed on a weekly basis, to finalise the ongoing consolidation work. We are looking forward the first collisions at top energy in about one week!
